Overworld! cover by 7 Minutes Dead

About this guy

I originally blogged about 7 minutes dead on Digitalcasm Daily Play #4 on October 19th of this year. 7 Minutes Dead is the moniker for Alex Gulikers of Dallas, Texas. Alex is a prolific producer of EDM with 42 tracks and counting on Soundcloud.

Why I like this

It's a rework of the title theme from Super Mario Bros. 2.  Need I say more?  Listen. To. This. It's good, and not gimmickly done either.

See you soon.

Shinkansen Girl  by Katsucurrytime

About these guys

According to Soundcloud, Katsucurrytime is based out of Liverpool, in the United Kingdom, and has produced music inspired by the Akiba arcade scene in Japan.  Seems legit.

Why I like this

For Some reason Shinkansen Girl reminds me of Super Metroid and is part of a self titled three track EP.  It has a good hook, and an unusual chord progression that definitely makes you wax nostalgic for 16 bit sidescrollers.  With Shinsansen Girl, Katsu has re-imagined that experience as if these games were  played in dark dingy clubs with smoke machines, instead of on the living room floor with bottles of Squirt, and your neighbor friend.

See you tomorrow.

Do You Believe by Poolside

About these guys

Filip Nikolik and Jeffrey Paradise are Poolside.  Their Album Pacific Standard Time is on the Day and Night Recordings label.  The genre is Daytime Disco.  This is, to date, my favorite song of 2012.
Website  -  Facecbook  -  Soundcloud  -  Itunes

Why I like this

I discovered Poolside on my way to a party in Los Angeles earlier this year.  I was listening to KCRW and probably stuck in traffic when the drums and percussion started marching out of my speakers and this super-old-school-but-also-super-bad-ass-casio-sounding piano riff joined in too.  If you were in traffic with me that day good chance you might read my lips as I said "Fuck yes!" a number of times out loud while this great, great, piece of music blasted out of my car's speaker system for four minutes and thirtytwo seconds.

It's catchy, it's punchy,  every sound that is played is perfect. it doesn't sound like commercial electronic music ala KIIS FM, and the vocals are simple and work great.  But then, a little ways in, the vocals cut out and you are treated to some acid sounding vintage synthesis that should sound alien, if it didn't hit the spot so damn much.  In fact, this has the best TB-303 sequencing I've heard in my entire life and it manages to launch this already excellent track through the skies, and in to geosynchronous orbit.  This. Song. Is. Fucking. Great.

See you tomorrow.

Fridge by ErikBokk

About this guy

Eric Nietti is the man behind this catchy videogame/japan-pop/breakbeat sounding gem.  He hails from Norway, and produces chiptunes, electro house, and 8 bit music.

Why I like this

Fridge.  It's all about the portamento.  When the 8 bit chords come in and move by slowly pitching up or down to the next spot, it's gold.  It's "that something special" that this track needed for me to favorite it.  That "something special element" seems to be a trademark of Erik's tracks.  Never mind the fact that I feel like I'm watching the credits roll after I just finished beating my favorite Super Nintendo game.  Most all of Erik's music have something unusual, but really nice going for them that make each song greater than the sum of their parts.  Also the production is super clean from start to finish.  Well done!

See you tomorrow!

Butter by 7 Minutes Dead

About this guy

7 Minutes Dead is the moniker for Alex Gulikers of Dallas, Texas.   Alex is a prolific producer of EDM with 41 tracks and counting on soundcloud.

Why I like this

Butter is a song that I can't help but like more every time I hear it.  When I sat down to write this post and actually try to put in to words why this track is so good, my description quickly spiraled in to a wordy overanalysis.  There are some  really unique elements and transitions that do make this track special, (like at 1:36), but diving deep in to the nooks and crannies would be a disservice to just how damn fun this track is as a whole.  So, give it a listen and find out for yourself what makes this great.

Have a great weekend!  I'm heading up to San Francisco for the weekend for a wedding.  I'll see you guys again on Tuesday with a new post!
