A New Life  by Jim James

About this guy

Jim James is best known as the frontman of psychedelic rock group My Morning Jacket.  This track is a new single from an upcoming full length solo release, Regions of Light and Sounds Of God.

Why I like this

A New Life is a soulful,  organic and wide open song about wanting to start a new life, again.  The first half of the track treats us to Jim's vocals and lyrics with muted guitar.  The texture and reverb are great, and the muted sounds are so delicate.  I was strangely reminded of Peter Bjorn and John for the first minute or so before A New Life opens up to a really exceptional arrangement that sounds like a hit that had been transported directly from 50s or 60s.  The only giveaway are the slightly robotic drums that fade in just before the transition. This is so damn good.

Jamaican Spirits  hash-n-chopped by Smoke Machine

About this guy.

Smoke machine is Santa Ana based DJ,  and producer, Jourdan Gallemore.  He is also one half of Datadrone and the founder of Datadronerecords.  He makes electronic beats, DJ's all sort of music, and is a walking music encyclopedia.  Jourdan's right in my backyard and I can't give this guy enough props.

Why I like this

Jamaican Spirits is  a very accessible psychedelic, trip hop-ey track that gently nudges the listener through five plus minutes of drones, vocals, and rhythmic ambience stitched together with a great beat.  Things start out with some cut up vox that lead in to some shifty electronic percussion.  The echoey, droney synths, and sampled lyrics that come in a few seconds later shoot this track in to a great headspace.  As the track continues, you are gently ushered a little deeper in to this really cool and psychedelic sonic space that never feels weird, and always grooves.  I dig this.

Mana Magic by Lobo Incognito

About this guy

Lobo Incognito is a producer of psychadellic, experimental, vocally focused electronic music out of Lagnua Niguel.

Why I like this

This is the kind of music that is appreciated.  Lobo is making sounds that are really well executed, and are crazily unique.  So I wont compare; I'll describe.  Heavily altered vocals start out the track in an eerie way that highlights certain patterns that come from having different filters emphasizing different parts of the sound of his voice.  This doesn't start like a track where I think "hey he's put some kind of filter on that, can't wait for it to open up and really get started,"  Nope,  It takes a good ten or fifteen seconds before you realize what the hell you are actually listening to.  Even when you recognize that it's someone's vocals you are listening to, they don't sound quite human. Lobo's doing sophisticated stuff with sound in this track.

Then enter the drums, and music behind the vocals which evolve in an incredibly smooth and interesting way.  Every sound has interesting timbre that is always coming out loud and clear through the entire track. The otherworldy voices, the tape saturated sounding bass and snare, the synth harp, it all comes together incredibly well and manages to sound pretty damn crisp. Mana Magic is a really well realized soundscape filled with haunting texture.

The drum and percussion sounds gradually change and the song takes a left turn about half way through.  Mana Magic sounds less like Lobo is taking synthesized sounds and breathing life in them than it does like Lobo's music IS alive. And it's breathing its hot breath on the back of your neck.  This is so original, and so well done.  I have to give some major props this stuff.  Way to go dude!

See you tomorrow.
